Can Organic Foods Help Your Allergies?
By Heather Legg | Jan 21, 2008
Two subjects have recently had pretty high priority with me lately. I only just realized there was a link between them. Like many of you, I have been wondering about the higher incidence of allergies in this generation of children. As adults, many of us can probably look back on our school years and remember no kids with food allergies, or very few if any. We know it’s common today and we do wonder why. Secondly, I’ve been thinking a lot about organic foods lately, and over the past few years, have been making the switch to organics and away from processed food. So, is there a connection to processed foods and allergies?
As I was perusing the internet for allergy information, I went to a site I really like, www.allergykids.com. This site was created by a mom who is investigating the link between allergies and the processed food we eat. Recently on her site, I saw an article called Organics 101: Lose the Toxins, Allergens and Weight! which I think is full of valuable and eye opening information.
In this article, she goes on to discuss how the chemicals in our food can lead to more allergies, and the more organic we go, the less allergies we will have. The article states that a recent study into organic food found that it appears to:
• Strengthen your immune system
• Improve sleeping habits
• Cut the risk of cancers
• Reduce the risks of heart disease
• Reduce a child’s exposure to hidden allergens
• Promote weight loss
As we have touched on before, the stronger the immune system, the less allergic reactions we will have. That is why so many doctors and experts stress that a healthy lifestyle will help with allergies. Even if organics don’t have a whole lot to do with allergies, they can help us be healthier on the whole which will help defend against allergies.
The article states that unorganic soy and corn have chemicals in them which may be contributing to the higher prevalence of allergies. In a reader’s feedback, she states that switching to organic milk has tremendously helped with her son’s excema. They used unorganic milk once after switching and his skin flared up immediately.
It makes sense, I think, the less un-natural things we put into our bodies, the healthier we will be. We know that allergies are our bodies’ way of fighting something, maybe our bodies know more than we think they do. This article is a great organic primer and I, for one, look forward to sharing it with my friends and my readers.
