Happy Mother’s Day (Belated!)
By Heather Legg | May 13, 2008
I hope all of you mothers had a beautiful, blessed day this past Sunday. Mother’s Day can be a tricky holiday – there are those that believe it’s manufactured by retail companies in order to sell more, there are those who hurt on that day due to a loss of a mother or child and there is the expectation that sometimes isn’t met. However, you should take a personal moment and give yourself your own mother’s day hug – let yourself know you are doing a wonderful job.
It’s hard enough to be a mother sometimes, and being the mother of a child with allergies throws another curve ball at you. We, as mothers, are on the clock every minute, and if your child has an allergy, we have another job to take of. We consistently check labels and go out of our way to shop and buy safe food. We write letters and consistently remind others of our child’s needs. We administer medicine and take our children to doctors, allergists, specialists, acupuncturists, we do whatever it takes to relieve symptoms and threats. We worry whether needlessly or with reason. We stand by our kids and their needs with support or without it. We ask questions that some might be glad we do and for some we really get on their nerves. We make special foods on a daily basis and special foods on a holiday basis. Who knows, maybe it was you cooking Mother’s Day dinner yesterday because you are the one who knows best what your child needs.
I guess we all know what we do, on a daily, weekly, yearly basis and I don’t really have to list all the things. Bottom line, we take care of our children and we meet the extra tasks. We do it consistently and thoroughly. Since you’re reading this, you’re taking time out of your busy day to further your knowledge, empowerment and community by keeping up to date and involved with allergies. You want what is best for your child and you do all you can.
My point today is thank yourself. You are doing a fantastic job and though it’s aggravating, scary, or just inconvenient sometimes, you do it. So happy late Mother’s Day and you should congratulate not just on Mother’s Day, but on every day for all you do for your children.
