Summer Food Choices
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
Summer has officially kicked off for me. I love having my kids home and not having the rush that constituently is with us during the school year. But just like any other parent, we wonder about food – what can we make for lunch that is economical, exciting and tastes good. Even more so for kids with food allergies. Even if we pack lunch all through the school year, our choices open because we can serve hot food or cold food and not worry about packing. We’ve got pool snacks to think about and friend’s houses to think about, too. Continue reading…

We all know allergens can pop in odd places way beyond unexpected foods. I’ve seen nut oils in lotions and shampoos, milk products in soaps and cleansers. Though it’s not quite the same as ingesting the allergens, and usually it’s more broken down and less allergenic, for those with severe allergies, they will want to stay away. Continue reading…
The PT Cruiser Effect
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
I think it’s really called the Red Volvo effect, but it’s when you all of a sudden start seeing something in particular everywhere. A week or so ago, my daughter asked what a PT Cruiser looks like (she gets a kick out to the name), and I pointed one out. Now we see them everywhere, even two on the one mile way to school this morning! It reminds me of allergies, once you take note of them, someone’s always got an allergy story to tell. Continue reading…

Traveling with Allergies – We Did it!

So we vacationed out of the country last week and of course were a little nervous as there are nuts in lots of French food. We would walk in a patisserie and see “pistache” and “noisettes,” lot of the chocolate contained nuts and so did some of the entrees on many menus, but we had no problems at all. We even made it through some chocolate shops in Belgium with very nice help in picking out chocolates with no nuts. Continue reading…

Chopped

I have a new show that I love to watch (by the way, I am addicted to The Food Network). The show is Chopped on The Food Network and if you’ve never seen it, it begins with four chefs who each have the same “surprise” basket of foods containing four or five ingredients that they must use in a dish. The catch is, the ingredients don’t necessarily go together and there is usually at least one that is either very hard to work with (like tamarind paste), very hard to make high end (mac and cheese in a box) or one that just plain doesn’t fit. The chef/contestants do get to use other ingredients from the stocked pantry and refrigerator. Also, one by the one the chefs get “chopped” on the basis of their dishes until there is just one winner left. Continue reading…
Allergens Are Everywhere, Aren’t They?

Last week I finished up a big committee event that I had chaired at my children’s school. It had taken a lot of planning and help form others, volunteering time, talents, and food. We had asked parents to send in different snacks, including breakfast bars and granola bars for artists coming to our school to perform. We got tons of food, tons of granola and breakfast bars, so many we had lots of leftovers. Continue reading…

International Travel with Allergies

We are planning a European trip within the next few months, and are extremely excited. My good friends have been there for a few months and we are excited to see them and have our own personal European tour. I’m not worried about time changes or transportation or currency exchange, all of that is part of the fun of international travel. The only thing that worries me, is, you guessed it, allergies. Continue reading…
