Great Debate About ‘Nut Fee Zones’
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
We so often hear of the debate between those with allergies versus those without. Those with need nut free zones, peanut fee schools, nut free airlines. Those without allergies don’t get it and don’t see why everyone should be troubled for the needs of a few. Just like everything, though, there is lots of grey area in between these two sides. Continue reading…
Milk Free Hot Cocoa
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
The weather outside is COLD! And one of the best things after being outside is a nice warm cup of cocoa. That is, unless you have a milk allergy or lactose intolerance. But, of course, there are ways around this one, too. You need to be careful, though, because many of the mixes contain milk products, even if you plan on using water. Continue reading…
More Health Benefits to Organic Dairy
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
“Young children who consume exclusively organic dairy products are significantly less likely to develop allergies, asthma or eczema by the age of two, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Louis Bolk Institute in the Netherlands and published in the British Journal of Nutrition,”
according to an article on www.naturalnews.com.
We’ve always done organic milk, more for the other health benefits, like lack of added hormones and antibiotics, etc. but I think this study gives more credence to the use of organic dairy. Dairy is always one of the top items to go organic with (foods like strawberries and lettuce usually rank high, too, while bananas and oranges not so high). Continue reading…
Allergy Testing Again?
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
The other night we were talking about how my daughter hasn’t had any semblance of an allergy reaction in quite some time, years actually. Remember, she had NAET, an alternative method of eliminating allergies, and since then – nothing. No hives, no mouth itch, nothing. Continue reading…
Sulfite Allergies
By Heather Legg | 1 Comment »
I recently was reading about sulfite allergies, and thought it was a fitting time of year to write about them, with the holidays and parties and extra opportunities to have a cocktail. Sulfite allergies are not to be confused with sulfa allergies (usually an allergic reaction to a sulfa containing anitbiotic like Septra, Bactirm or Pediazole). A sulfite allergy is a reaction to a sulfite or sulfate agent which are common preservatives in foods such as dried foods, fruit juices, baked goods, processed foods, certain seafoods and…wine. Continue reading…
Traditions Change
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
Growing up, our Thanksgiving meal was very traditional. At least it was tradition for me. As I’ve gotten older and my life has changed, so has my Thanksgiving menu. Sometimes I get a little nostalgic for the foods that are no longer on the table, but new ones have replaced them, and the reasons are good. Continue reading…
What Does Avoidance Really Mean?
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
When you do discover you or your child has a food allergy, one of the first things you are probably told is to avoid that food. So what does that mean, really? If you have a tree nut allergy, do you avoid all tree nuts? How about a seafood allergy, do you satay away from all kinds of seafood? The difficult thing about allergies is they are so variable person to person, even throughout the same person’s life. Continue reading…
Lactose Intolerant?
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
My friend’s daughter has been complaining a lot of of stomach aches; she calls it the “spiky kind.” My friend spoke to the doctor and guess what, he said take her off of all dairy for a week or so, keep a diary and see how she does. He feels it’s probably lactose intolerance. Continue reading…
School, Student And Family Responsibilities In School
By Heather Legg | No Comments »
My mother was recently telling me of a friend of hers who has a grand child allergic to a few different foods. Apparently, the child’s mother was searching for a private school for the girl and chose the school based on the fact that another child went there with the same allergies. It was reassuring to her that she would have that support from the school already being aware of allergies (the same ones her daughter has) and she felt safe with the protocol they took on allergies. There was also the added support of the family who was already involved in the school. Continue reading…
FoodAllergyMama.com – Check It Out!

Always searching for food allergy blogs and information – here’s a good one to keep on your favorites page – the Food Allergy Mama. This is Kelly Rudnicki’s blog and she is the mother of four young children in suburban Chicago. Her second child was diagnosed at age one with severe dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut and legume allergy. Being asthmatic, the likelihood of a life threatening reaction from food is increased so Kelly spent a few years learning the ins and outs of food labels, ingredient and product information, and most importantly, how to cook and bake for not only her son, but for the rest of her family as well. Continue reading…
