Whether it is due to a gluten allergy or to celiac disease, being gluten free is not easy, though it may be necessary for your health. Though both gluten allergy and celiac disease may have similar symptoms, celiac disease involves damage to the small intestine which in turn leads to a variety of other health problems. Beyond A Peanut Flashcards

By Heather Legg | Mar 19, 2008 | No Comments »

A reader recently posted a recommended tool for anyone wanting to learn, or teach, about food allergies. This tool is the Beyond A Peanut Flashcards, which were created “to help educate children with a peanut allergy, their families, friends, and other individuals who provide care for children with peanut allergies.”  I decided to do a little checking into these cards and like what I found. They have been deemed highly effective and have made a big difference in the lives of many peanut and tree nut allergy sufferers. Continue reading…

Chocolate: Friend or Foe

By Heather Legg | Mar 16, 2008 | No Comments »

I think I probably eat some chocolate every day. I love it. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, high end and a good old Hershey bar. For some, however, chocolate just doesn’t work. There can be a few reasons why, whether it’s an allergy to the milk in the chocolate or the nuts used in the factory, or maybe a sensitivity to the caffeine in the chocolate. Perhaps this piece will help you if you suffer from any of these and are still searching for the perfect bite of chocolate. Continue reading…

Though it’s not one of the allergy “biggies,” avocados cause their share of allergies. And though they usually don’t cause the extreme reactions that other allergens may cause, there is still a possibility of anaphylaxis when it comes to avocados. The distinction between the reactions is connected with the type of avocado allergy, because there are two types. Continue reading…

On Allergymoms.com this week, there is a post that is sure to spark conversation. The poster, Gina, even states the fact that she debated to post it because of the negativity of the information. Apparently, one of the American Idol contestants has a peanut allergy and on another site, it was suggested that the other contestants could or might use this against her. Continue reading…

Food Dye Allergies

By Heather Legg | Feb 6, 2008 | No Comments »

You think that there is something that is causing your child an allergic reaction, yet you can’t figure out what it is. He is able to eat nuts and peanuts; eggs don’t bother him, nor does wheat or shellfish. Even milk is agreeable to him. So what could it be? Did you ever consider that the dyes in food could be causing your child allergies? If not, you may want to think about this one. Continue reading…

Here’s a Safe Holiday Cookbook

By Staff | Dec 21, 2007 | No Comments »

With Christmas right around the corner, I’ve been doing my annual holiday baking. Over the years my repertoire has changed, however. No more nuts in my cookies; I am careful to always clean my pans and utensils when changing recipes, and my packaging is very precise. I think I know all the allergies my friends and their families have, but just to make sure, I let any recipient know the ingredients. Continue reading…
