Mold Allergy

There are numerous different types of molds. Allergies to these molds affect people of all ages. However, there are some molds that do not cause any allergies at all. In fact, there are only approximately 12 different kinds of molds that actually can cause an allergic reaction in a person. Nevertheless, these 12 molds are the main reason why people have seasonal allergies.
Mold is a type of fungi, which multiplies by expelling spores into the air. For this reason, mold spores are very small airborne particles. These particles are most active in the spring to late fall because they require warm, moist locations in order to thrive. The temperature must be between 70-80 degrees, therefore when the first frost hits, all of the mold spores are killed. However, since these mold spores are airborne, it is possible for mold to make it inside of your home. This is actually an ideal environment in which mold spores can thrive. In fact, the most common place for mold spores to live inside of the house is in bathrooms, air conditioning units, garbage cans, and basements where there is a lot of moisture. Other places wherein mold spores can be found include air conditioning ducts, damp wood, refrigerator filters, and anyplace where there is a water leak. Besides being damp, all of these places are dark, thus also helping to encourage the growth of mold spores.
Allergies to mold spores are known as stachybotrys allergies. The symptoms of this allergy can affect your ears, nose and throat. The most common symptoms of this type of symptoms are watery eyes, wheezing, a stuffy nose, a dry ticklish throat, ringing in the ears and shortness of breath.
You may not need to seek medical attention if you only have a mild allergy to mold spores. However, if your symptoms are severe you may want to seek treatment from a doctor because these symptoms can get severe enough to require hospitalization. This is because it damages the nervous system and causes an inability to concentrate, sleep disorders, and changes in a person’s personality. In infants it can cause bleeding in the lungs. This is especially true if the infant is also being exposed to second hand smoke.
Some ways in which you can control mold inside of your home is by running the exhaust fan in your bathroom and kitchen. You can also run a dehumidifier or your air-conditioner. Furthermore, you should also vacuum your home on a regular basis. If you are able to invest in your health, you can purchase air filters, mold lights and ozone generators. All of these things also help fight off mold spores within your home. If all else fails, you should seek help from a medical professional. Doctors are able to prescribe antihistamines, which will help to alleviate the symptoms of mold allergens. Some of these doctors prescribe acupuncture to decrease their patient’s allergic reaction to mold, helping the patient to be better able to tolerate the reactions that are caused by their allergy to mold.
