As some readers may know, we have been battling a summer rash at my house. My oldest daughter has sensitive skin and is prone to heat rash and allergies to certain lotions and sunscreens. Throw in the chlorine from the pool and we’ve had a pretty tough time controlling this. The pediatrician said it is eczema, and all these things are exacerbating this.

I recently blogged about shopping at Trader Joe’s for allergy free groceries, but here is one better. A complete allergy free store has just opened.
It’s a challenge to shop allergy free and I remember when my daughter was first diagnosed with a tree nut allergy, I had the “what if” fears. You can probably relate. Continue reading…

The last time I was shopping in my neighborhood Trader Joe’s market, I happened to notice a large amount of Gluten free products. This in turn made me look a little closer at some other products in regards to allergies. I liked what I saw.
I like shopping at Trader Joe’s for a number of reasons. For one, their products are marked quite well. Continue reading…

We always hear about how dust mites are so hard to get rid of and keep away. They end up everywhere in the house, especially in bedding. Because we spend a good percentage of our hours in bed, the effect of dust mites can be awful. Our faces are in the pillow with the dust mites; we breathe them in through our covers. They even get into the mattress. So what is the best way to really get rid of them? Continue reading…
New Allergy Free, Skin Friendly Clothing Line

I remember once years ago, my daughter broke out in a rash all over her legs. After trying and trying to figure out why, we realized it was from the new pants she had worn. I hadn’t washed them before she wore them, and whatever was in them, caused her to break out. Many people have much more sensitive skin than that. They can only wear certain materials or else not only find themselves very uncomfortable, but having serious skin issues as well. Continue reading…

By Heather Legg | Mar 5, 2008 | No Comments »
Created by a severe allergy sufferer, this site is full of products for people who suffer from chemical sensitivities and allergies. David Tan, B.Sc., MBA, the founder of AlerG.com, personally suffers from a variety of allergies and chemical sensitivities. In his story on site, he explains how he believes he became so allergic and sensitive to not only dust mites, cats, dogs and pollen, but also perfumes and scents. He discusses the development of his allergies, the trials he has been through living with unknown allergens and the things he has done to combat his allergies and sensitivities. He created AlerG in 2001 to provide products that he knows work and that have been proven to be safe. Here are a few samples of the products you can find on www.alerg.com: Continue reading…
Valentine’s Day without Chocolate – Oh My!
By Heather Legg | Feb 5, 2008 | No Comments »
Here comes another one of our holidays based around food – Valentine’s Day. Now this one isn’t so extreme as Christmas or Thanksgiving, but it is one of the biggest chocolate days of the year. We need to talk about some good substitute gifts if your Valentine is allergic to chocolate, or the many things that are in it (milk, nuts, peanuts, soy…). I’m not big into pricey gifts for Valentine’s Day; I think this is one time when it truly is the thought that counts. Here are some low cost options to the box of chocolates for all of your Valentines: Continue reading…

By staff | Jan 3, 2008 | No Comments »
Usually this time of year brings relief from hay fever and other pollen allergies, but with the unusually warm weather in parts of the country, I think that some of us are still feeling the effects of allergies. I recently learned of an herbal/homeopathic tincture that I think is worth mentioning. SOS HistaDrops clears symptoms of allergies, hayfever, and allergic rhinitis without drowsiness. Still Need a Gift? Try Allergy Awareness Clothing
By staff | Dec 14, 2007 | No Comments »
A new store opened near me, you know the ones popping up that sell prepared foods that you just put in your oven and serve. As I stopped in for my dinner party meal, I did a little browsing. I saw some allergy awareness T-Shirts that not only got the point across but that were also very stylish and fun. I thought what a great holiday gift idea to not only promote awareness and maintain safety, but also to make something that is very un-fun, just a little bit playful. Continue reading…
Food Gift Ideas

I remember a few years ago I gave a good friend some spiced pecans for Christmas. There were no allergies in her house, but her husband just hated nuts. Since then, and of course, since my daughter’s allergies, I have been much more careful in the gift giving of food. It is the holidays, however, and we all love to eat! It’s time to eat some things that year round we may not indulge in, but it’s also a time to be extra vigilant about our allergies or one’s our friends may have. Continue reading…
