Advair Diskus (Fluticasone / Salmeterol)

Advair Diskus is an inhaled drug that is prescribed to treat severe asthma attacks or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) resulting from chronic bronchitis.  It contains a Salmeterol which acts as a bronchodilator to prevent shortness of breath and wheezing by relaxing the muscle cells surrounding the airways (bronchioles) to stop them from contracting and narrowing the airways.
This Salmeterol is combined with Fluticasone, a synthetic corticosteroid that reduces the inflammation caused by the swelling due to congestion of the airways.  Its effect starts 30 to 60 minutes after inhaling the medication and can last for up to 12 hours.  However, it cannot be used to treat asthma attacks that have already started.
