Allergic Asthma

Asthma is a condition in which the bronchial tubes and/or the lungs become inflamed, clogged with thick mucous and breathing becomes increasingly difficult. Many people believe that the problem is the ability to get air into the lungs, in reality it actually becomes impossible to move the old air out, leaving no room for the new, oxygenated air.
In allergy sufferers the histamine reactions caused by irritants and allergens can increase the possibility of causing asthma. The variety of indoor allergens, mostly airborne, is taken into the respiratory system irritating the tender mucous membranes of the airways creating inflammation and asthma.
There is a long list of symptoms of asthma, some are early warning symptoms and others are those of full blown asthmatic attacks. Early warnings include: sleeping problems, dark circles under eyes, itching in the throat, breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, wheezing, sneezing, unproductive cough, breathing changes, moodiness, headaches and intolerance to exercise.

Buteyko Breathing Method

Feb 14, 2007

The Buteyko Breathing Method is a series of safe and simple breathing exercises proven effective in managing aasthma and other respiratory conditions.  Developed in 1952 by Professor Konstantin Buteyko from Russia, studies reported improvements in asthma, rhinitis, and nasal mucus, and it restores natural breathing patterns, and eliminates the need for reliever medications.  Continue reading…

Air Purifiers: Air Ionizers

Feb 14, 2007

Air ionizers, also called, ionic air purifiers, work by ionizing or neutralizing air particulates. When switched on, voltage runs through a series of built-in needles, creating electrons, that when discharged into the air, they attach to air molecules and form ions. Continue reading…

Serevent (Salmeterol)

Feb 14, 2007

Serevent is the trade name for salmeterol, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline in an aerosol inhaler form.  Salmeterol is a bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles in the walls of the bronchial tubes, allowing easy flow of air in and out of the lungs in order to improve breathing, treat wheezing, and shortness of breath in those with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Pulmicort etc. (Budesonide)

Feb 14, 2007

Pulmicort contains budesonide, a synthetic corticosteroid used to treat nasal allergy symptoms such as stuffiness, runny nose, and wheezing.  When it is inhaled into the lungs, it reduces the swelling and inflammation and controls the production of mucus in the airways.  Continue reading…

Flovent etc. (Fluticasone)

Feb 14, 2007

Flovent is fluticasone administered as an oral metered dose inhaler for long-term asthma treatment.  each dosage delivers the medication straight into the lungs.  This corticosteroid reduces the inflammation and swelling of the airways to control symptoms of asthma (difficulty breathing, chest tightening, wheezing, and coughing due to airway obstruction). Continue reading…

Ventolin (Albuterol / Salbutamol)

Feb 14, 2007

Ventolin (Albuterol / Salbutamol) is a bronchodilator medication to treat asthma or other conditions which involve airway obstruction due to narrowing of the bronchial passages (bronchospasm) such as exercise-induced asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.  It works by widening the constricted airways by loosening the muscles allowing the air to flow freely in and out of the lungs promoting quick relief from shortness of breath, wheezing, cough, and congestion.  Continue reading…

Singulair (Montelukast)

Feb 14, 2007

Singulair is a prescription medicine approved for control of asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever).  It can safely be used by adults and children as young as 2 years old for treatment of outdoor allergies, and for children as young as 6 months old for treatment of indoor allergies.  Continue reading…

Air Purifiers (HEPA Filters)

Feb 14, 2007

HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters are capable of removing 99.97% of particulates as small as 0.3 microns. The specifications have become an industry standard in most critical medical and hi-tech applications. Trapped particles in the filter are never flushed out of the filter, the efficiency of the 99.97% never decreases, and the HEPA filtration process is purely mechanical and produces no by-products. Continue reading…

Advair Diskus (Fluticasone / Salmeterol)

Feb 13, 2007

Advair Diskus is an inhaled drug that is prescribed to treat severe asthma attacks or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) resulting from chronic bronchitis.  It contains a Salmeterol which acts as a bronchodilator to prevent shortness of breath and wheezing by relaxing the muscle cells surrounding the airways (bronchioles) to stop them from contracting and narrowing the airways.
